Intense Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to stay indoors as strong winds lash the region.

Powerful winds reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 properties experiencing outages and forced agencies to call off over 100 flights, as reported by domestic outlets.

The winds are impacting the complete South Island and southern parts of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced infrequent high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been advised to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the southern region, while agencies state that the electricity supply was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services in and out of the city have been suspended because of the weather, and various routes and public facilities are not operating.

At the same time authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to support emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages During Extreme Weather

The wild winds on today coincide with tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been called a "major walkout", demanding better pay and working conditions.

Yet the severe conditions has pressured them to alter various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Comparable winds are also sweeping Australia, ushering in a high-temperature event to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have announced flame prohibitions for fear of forest fires.
