Police mentioned they were alerted by a man who noticed a car in Hanau covered with reddish substance

Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then located multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Officials say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.

An important official stated the attack made him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
